I have lost my mind, I'm sure of it!
A few weeks ago, one of my bosses asked me if I'd like to take his cockatiel, permanently. I said I would, and the following Saturday, met him at work, and acquired Sammy.
Scott felt left out because Sammy took instantly to me, and asked if we could get a couple of finches. I thought for a second and said, "Sure, why not?"
If I had known how that was going to snowball, I'd have said NO WAY!
Two weeks after buying the finches, new cages for both the finches and cockatiel, along with all the accoutrement they required, we were walking through a swap meet and saw this guy with about a gazillion parakeets in one cage. I felt so sorry for them that I felt I had to rescue a couple of them, at least. And of course, the parakeets needed a cage!
So, after spending about $300 on birds, feed, and cages, we decided we wanted one of the bigger birds. I started researching and thought that I just might want a Sunday Conure.
I decided this time, I would buy the cage first, and then get the bird. Going out to eBay, I found cages and because I wasn't completely sure what bird I'd eventually get, I bought the biggest cage we could afford.
Before the cage could arrive, I found someone who lived in Paris, Texas, about a 3 hour drive from us, who had both a Sunday Conure AND a Senegal Parrot - my second choice. We took off after work one night and drove to Paris. We walked in and looked at both birds. My mind had been set on the Sunday, so I told them we would take her—and then I bent over to talk to the Senegal...and she "kissed" me. My heart melted on the spot! While the breeder was telling me he'd give me a great deal on both birds and their cages, I was looking at Scott asking, "Can we do both birds??" He gave his approval to the deal and we walked out with both birds, both cages, and a week's worth of parrot feed for about $150 less than I would have expected to pay!
So now we have a Senegal Parrot, a Sunday Conure, a Cockatiel, 2 Parakeets, and 2 Finches...who have laid 4 eggs so far this week!
All we're lacking now is a partridge in a pear tree ;)
Happy holidays!
